PetMed participates in veterinary clinical trials for medical research and to study new products and techniques that may benefit our patients. This type of research helps us learn more about new medications, vaccines, or therapies. Some clinical trials we have worked on include new pain medications and antibiotic therapies.

Pets & Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are used by pharmaceutical and nutrition companies to test new medications and diets for safety and effectiveness prior them being released for widespread use. PetMed is fortunate to be one of the few veterinary hospitals in the nation that is actively involved in clinical trials.

Participating in Clinical Trials

Your pet’s participation in a clinical trial is completely voluntary. Some trials may be offered to only a few types of appropriate participants, for example those testing new pain medications. Other studies are open to a broader pet population, such as those that compare one product’s effectiveness against another. None of these trials carry significant risk to the patients because the medications have been safety tested prior to the clinical trial. As a pet owner, you receive all information about the trial before you commit to participating.

These trials allow our patients first access to the newest medications, and they also provide our clients financial compensation for their time and effort. Past trials have included vaccines, antibiotics, dietary therapies, weight loss drugs, pain medications, and parasite control.

Call our hospital to discuss your pet’s eligibility for current trials, as well as the risks and benefits, with our veterinarians.
